WC 21.9.2020

This week we are focusing on the book ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett. Below you will find a video of the author reading the story as well as some activities and resources.

Activity 1 - book talk:

Pause the clip near the start when the author shows the front cover of the book. Discuss and write answers to these questions:

  • What can you see?
  • What questions would you like to ask?
  • What do you think will happen in this story?
  • What can you infer? (Infer means to make a decision based on evidence in the text or pictures)

Activity 2 - book talk:

Now listen to the whole recording of the story. Discuss and write answers to these questions:

  • What did you like about the story?
  • What were your favourite words or sentences?
  • What did you dislike about the story?
  • What puzzled you?

Activity 3 - plan a post card:

Imagine Sunny has visited a landmark in Taunton and he wants to send a postcard home to his family. Create a simple plan which covers the following things:

  • A description of the place.
  • What he ate.
  • What the weather was like.
  • What he does.
  • What Sunny likes and dislikes.

Activity 4 - writing a postcard (this activity will be continued in school next week):

Create a postcard using your plan to help you. Use the 'Common Exception Words' word mat to help with your spellings and try to include the special features of a postcard such as an address, who you are writing to and who it is from. Don't forget to create a wonderful picture on the back to show where you have visited.

This week we are identifying how materials can be used for more than one thing. E.g. metal can be used for coins, cans, cars, table legs. Wood can be used for matches, flooring, roof rafters …

Explore and research examples of this for different materials.
