English is central to a child’s language development and is the major vehicle by which children come to understand their work, externalise their thoughts, analyse their experiences, increase their awareness of their fellow men and develop their imagination. English is at the hub of the Primary Curriculum and wherever learning occurs, children’s language is employed and the potential for its further development is present.
Competence in English enables children to communicate effectively at home, at school and in the wider world and leads to improved life opportunities. The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, together with confidence in the use of ICT, enable children to organise and express their own thoughts and to access the knowledge and ideas of others. Throughout the school our topics are used as a vehicle for the teaching of these skills. In addition to this, Read Write Inc is the programme used to deliver systematic synthetic phonics.
