We began our Roman Day around the campfire amidst rumours that the Romans were on the march and heading for the West Country. Our tribe, Dumnonii debated whether we would fight them or accept Roman rule. We looked at Celtic artefacts and then a Roman soldier arrived and told us what it would mean if we agreed to be governed by Rome. Before we made our decision we made some clay offerings to the Gods.
After break we found out about Roman life through artefacts, learned about Roman weaponry and how they dressed. During the afternoon we took our shields into the hall and found out what it would be like to be a member of the Roman army. We practised our drill, getting into formation, following commands in Latin and marching, before we went outside to face Year Four in a battle. We advanced using the turtle formation and won!
We had a memorable time at Caerleon learning all about life in Roman times.
